Narsingh Yadav was at the Sports Authority of India’s Sonepat Centre when got a call from the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) on June 19. They asked for his mail id only to be told that he had failed the dope test. Narsingh couldn’t grasp that. His world came shattering down and froze for a bit. His Rio 2016 Olympics hopes was in jeopardy.

“I am myself shocked after this, it’s a conspiracy against me. CBI probe should be conducted,” said Narsingh. “I am doing so well, why would I even take banned steroids?”

Narsingh also stated that he had talked to the federation about the issue. Narsingh added, “In the mess anyone can mix anything in water or food and give it, I have written all this to the federation.”

“I should be sent to Rio Olympics and hope this will be sorted out soon. I have written to federation, want justice.”

Narsingh Yadav tested positive for a curious performance enhancing drug, Metadienone, just less than a month ahead of the Rio games. During an interview he said that he had never heard of that drug before and asked why would he try something negative which could misplace his chance at Rio Olympics. He did ask his doctor about the drug to which he replied that the drug had no use in wrestling and only helped develop muscle.

“No athlete will dare to take steroids this close to competition,’’ says Dr Ashok Ahuja, expert and senior doctor who served with the Sports Authority of India’s medical team for over two decades. Except, Narsingh returned a positive for his ‘A’ sample on a test conducted by the National Anti Doping Agency on June 25 – just over a month before Rio begins. He was also tested on July 5, but the results are not known. Subsequently, he traveled to Spain for a competition and won bronze.

Even, Narsingh Yadav’s roommate Sandeep Yadav, who was also tested positive for the same substance, claimed conspiracy behind the whole issue.

“The fact that Narisngh’s teammate at the camp has also tested positive for the same substance, it clearly looks to be a foul play. Both the wrestlers were consuming the same supplements as they were roommates. It arises suspicion,” WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said.

“There was a high quantity of steroid in the sample, which is hard to believe. It seems like a deliberate thing. Why would anyone take such high dose,” he questioned.

Tomar also said that only two athletes have been tested positive in camp which strengthens the conspiracy.
