The Assam government on Monday (August 24) sought an interim relief of Rs 500 crore for relief, rehabilitation and repair works in flood-affected areas across the state, which has claimed lives of at least 13 persons so far.

The floods have affected 18 districts with the worst-hit being Dhubri, Goalpara, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon.

The flooding is the worst in the past three years, affecting nearly 600,000 people in 19 of the state's 27 districts, officials said.

Many other rivers in Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Morigaon, Sonitpur and Nalbari district are also flowing above the red mark.

Several areas of Kaziranga National Park were under flood waters forcing wild animals to move to highland areas in the nearby hills of Karbi Anglong district.

The rising water of the rivers has breached several embankments in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Dhemaji, Barpeta and Goalpara districts.

The district administrations have opened 124 relief camps where nearly a lakh people have taken shelter.
