The first day of the festival is celebrated as Bhogi festival in honour of Lord Indra or the rain god, as per Hindu scriptures. People pay homage to Lord Indra for the abundance of harvest and prosperity for the land. (Source: File Photo)

Third day of Pongal is called Mattu Pongal, the day of Pongal for cows. In this, multi-coloured beads, tinkling bells, sheaves of corn and flower garlands are tied around the neck of the cattle and they are worshiped. They are fed with Pongal and taken to the village centers. (Source: File Photo)
On the fourth day or Kannum Pongal, people wash and place a turmeric leaf on the ground. On this leaf, the leftovers of sweet Pongal and Venn Pongal, ordinary rice as well as betel leaves, betel nuts, two pieces of sugarcane, turmeric leaves, and plantains are used. (Source: File Photo)
