Adding unsweetened cocoa powder to your coffee can be a smart and tasty way to boost your alertness-especially if you’re managing diabetes, said Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator. (Photo: Freepik)
For people with diabetes, unsweetened cocoa powder is a great choice because it doesn’t contain added sugars that could spike your blood sugar. In fact, cocoa flavanols might help your body use insulin better, which is important for keeping blood sugar levels steady, added Malhotra. (Photo: Freepik)
Both ingredients are rich in beneficial compounds that positively impact metabolism, cognition, and mood, said Dr Narander Singla, lead consultant, internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi. (Photo: Freepik)
Cocoa powder contains polyphenols known to boost metabolism and aid in weight management, while the caffeine in coffee further accelerates metabolic rate and promotes fat burning. (Photo: Freepik)
"Together, they also enhance cognitive function—caffeine increases focus and alertness, while cocoa flavonoids improve blood flow to the brain, supporting mental performance especially when tired," said Dr Singla. (Photo: Freepik)
Cocoa is packed with natural antioxidants called flavanols, which have been shown to support brain function and may even lift your mood. "When you mix cocoa with coffee, you get the benefits of both: the caffeine helps you feel more awake, while the cocoa can make you feel a bit more focused and calm," said Malhotra. Additionally, cocoa contains mood-enhancing compounds like theobromine and phenylethylamine, which can help reduce stress and elevate mood. Both coffee and cocoa are also excellent sources of antioxidants, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and cellular damage, said Dr Singla. (Photo: Freepik)
Just stir a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder into your coffee. Go for natural (not Dutch-processed) cocoa if possible, since it has more helpful flavonoids. And remember, skip the sugar and heavy creamers- try a splash of milk or a sugar-free alternative instead. "It’s a simple way to make your morning coffee a bit healthier and more enjoyable," said Malhotra. (Photo: Freepik)
