Murder on the Orient Express is only the latest adaptation of English mystery writer Agatha Christie's famous 1934 novel. On film, this adaptation, directed by British actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, is the second one after the 1974 one by Sidney Lumet which was a huge success both critically and commercially. Murder on the Orient Express, as the title indicates, is about a murder that occurs on a train. The film has a fantastic cast with names like Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley apart from Kenneth Branagh as the main character, the detective Hercule Poirot who is charged with solving the mystery and everybody is the suspect. As already mentioned, the cast of this film alone is a solid reason to watch this film. The actors play characters from different nationalities and ethnicities and everybody on the carriage, in which murder occurs, is the suspect.
Story of the film is also another reason to watch this film. Agatha Christie was the mistress of mystery writing, always keeping readers on their toes. More than eight decades after this novel was first published, it continues to shock and enthrall readers, and since the film follows the novel, we can expect it would do likewise.
The detective Hercule Poirot, played by Kenneth Branagh with a lush moustache, is one of the most famous fictional detectives around. He is, simply put, Agatha Christie's Sherlock Holmes. And it is fortunate that it is an actor of Kenneth Branagh's caliber who has donned the role.
The feel of the film is also one of the reasons you should absolutely watch this film. Murder on the Orient Express is set inside a single carriage of a train and is pretty claustrophobic throughout. It makes viewers uncomfortable not just because of the suspense and thrill, but also because of the setting and camera angles.
Murder on the Orient Express is getting a lot of praise for its production values. It does not have a sky-high budget, but seems to have managed the money well in building lush sets, costumes and so on. If there is one thing you can be sure of about this film, it is that it is going to wow you.
