Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency: One of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka, Udupi-Chikmagalur, was created as part of the implementation of the delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies in 2008.
Udupi-Chikmagalur is a BJP stronghold as it has been winning seats consecutively for the last three terms. The current-sitting MP, BJP’s Shobha Karandlaje, has won the Lok Sabha 2019 and 2014 elections with significant margins, defeating opposition candidates from Congress.
With the Lok Sabha elections 2024 here scheduled to be held in the second phase on April 26, with the counting of votes and announcement of results on June 4, we will witness a fray between Kota Shrinivas Poojary from the BJP and K. Jayaprakash Hegde from the Congress.
Kota Shrinivas Poojary, BJP:
Kota Shrinivas Poojary, a former Minister in the Social Welfare Department and Backward Classes Welfare Department of Karnataka is the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Additionally, Poojary has also served as the leader of the House in the Karnataka Legislative Council from 2019 to 2023 and as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council during 2018–19.
K. Jayaprakash Hegde, Congress:
K. Jayaprakash Hegde, a former Minister of Ports and Fisheries, represented the Brahmavar constituency as a Janata Dal candidate in 1994 and as an independent MLA in 1999 and 2004. However, due to delimitation, when the Brahmavar constituency ceased to exist, Hegde contested the 2008 Assembly elections from Kundapur as a Congress candidate and faced defeat.
Nevertheless, he won the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru parliamentary seat in the 2012 by-elections from the BJP, though he was later expelled from Congress. After joining the BJP, Hegde served as the Chairman of the State Backward Class Commission. Recently, Hegde has rejoined the Congress party, and he is the front runner for the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru constituency seat for the upcoming Lok Sabha 2024 elections.
