The Congress candidate for Ambala Cantonment assembly seat is pitted not only against a strong BJP nominee, five-time BJP MLA and Haryana minister Anil Vij, but also faces a rebel from his own party.
The party picked Mahila Congress leader Venu Singla, who is said to be close to Haryana unit chief Kumari Selja for the seat. Earlier, former Congress minister Nirmal Singh was the Congress candidate from here. Upset over his daughter Chitra Sarwara not getting the ticket, Nirmal Singh quit party and fielded her as an independent candidate.
While Nirmal Singh filed his nomination from Ambala City as an independent candidate, Chitra Sarwara jumped into the fray in Ambala Cantonment. In both these seats, party infighting seems to have cost Congress as independents are runner up on both seats

So how have the party's candidates fared so far? The party leads in eight seats. Chautala leads from Uchana Kalan while Naina Singh leads from Badhra and Ram Kumar Gautam leads from Narnaund. With the results from Haryana pointing to a hung Assembly, according to early trends, Chautala may emerge kingmaker. "Neither BJP, nor Congress will cross 40 seats. I believe that JJP will hold the key to formation of government in Haryana," he said today morning

"Haryana has already locked its future in EVMs. Trends are coming out. Each and every party worker's hard work will show. Haryana will change today. Despite a clean sweep in all 10 Lok Sabha seats in May and a weakened opposition in Haryana, the ruling party could face tough resistance in certain Assembly constituencies. There are at least 39 such Assembly segments out of 90 in Haryana, where BJP has never been able to make sufficient inroads. Besides these, there are 21 Assembly segments where BJP won for the first time in 2014 Vidhan Sabha polls. Read more
Haryana minister Anil Vij, a five-time legislator from Ambala Cantt, was said to be leading from his constituency in early trends. BJP minister Capt. Abhimanyu is also leading from Narnaund. Meanwhile, among the Opposition parties, JJP chief Dushyant Singh Chautala is leading in Uchana Kalan and Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala is leading in Kaithal.
The BJP has taken a wide lead in early trends in Haryana, leading in 53 of the state's 90 Assembly seats. The Congress is up in 22 seats, while other candidates are ahead in eight. The BJP's comfortable lead, as was predicted in most exit polls, will allow the party a second 5-year term.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his predecessor Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Congress are leading in their respective constituencies, as per the early trends available. Khattar, a first-time MLA, is seeking re-election from Karnal, while Hooda is seeking re-election from his stronghold Garhi Sampla-Kiloi in Rohtak district.
The first hour of counting is usually reserved for postal votes -- votes of government staffers across the country, usually members of the defence and paramilitary forces. In Haryana, the BJP is leading in 40 of the 53 seats where counting has begun.
Appointed Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee president just a month before the state went to polls (October 21), Kumari Selja had her task cut out — from handling the faction-ridden party and senior leaders such as former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had publicly taken divergent positions on Article 370 and the NRC, to taking on the BJP, that won all the 10 seats in Haryana in the general elections this year. While the Rajya Sabha MP and Congress Legislative Party member admits she was appointed the Haryana chief a “little late”, she says the party is working to expose the state government with “renewed vigour”. She also admits October 21 polls are a challenge, but denies differences within state unit will hurt party
In 2014, BJP had won 47 seats – its best ever performance in Haryana, and formed the government with absolute majority. INLD had got 19, Congress 15 and Haryana Janhit Congress (which later merged into Congress) had got two. With a current strength of 48 in the Vidhan Sabha (including Jind that BJP won in a bypoll in January this year), BJP has set a target of 75 plus seats, this time.
The other political parties including BSP, AAP, INLD-SAD combine, Swaraj India and the Loktantra Suraksha Party (LSP) have also thrown their hat into the ring, though none of them is fighting on all 90 seats. Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stayed away from the campaign even while his party is contesting on 46 seats. The October 21 polls will also decide the fate of over 30 turncoats in the fray with BJP fielding 15, JJP 13 and Congress two such candidates.
Even as counting of votes is underway, Jannayak Janata Party leader Dushyant Chautala exuded confidence about winning the election. "Na BJP, na Congress 40 par karegi, satta ki chabi JJP ke haath mein hogi," he said, reported news agency ANI. Dushyant is locked in one of the most keenly observed poll battles in Haryana. The former MP from Hisar will once again take on BJP’s sitting MLA Prem Lata, who had defeated him from the Jat-dominated Uchana Kalan constituency by a margin of over 7,000 votes in the 2014 Assembly polls. Prem Lata is wife of Rajya Sabha MP and former Union minister Birender Singh.
Exit polls for the assembly elections in Haryana have predicted a sweep by the ruling BJP. While the polls were unanimous in predicting the NDA’s fortunes, they varied in their projection of seats for rival alliances — some forecast a further dip in the Opposition tally from 2014.
In Haryana, the polls have forecast 10-12 seats for the Congress, which had claimed 15 seats five years ago. The prediction has not come as a surprise though, considering that the Congress was in disarray in both these states. The majority mark in Haryana is 45.
Along with Maharashtra and Haryana, results for bypolls to 51 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies will be declared today. The Election Commission will announce the results of bye-elections held in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Meghalaya and Telangana. Apart from this, Satara and Samastipur Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra and Bihar respectively also went to polls. You can follow live updates on the bypolls here.
The Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) on Wednesday wrote to the chief election commissioner of India and the chief electoral officer of Haryana requesting that internet services be suspended in the region or at least within a 5 km radius around counting stations and strong rooms till the end of counting day. The party, in its 16-page letter, also suggested that jammers be installed, “to preserve the sanctity of the election process”.
The request cited media reports, previous court cases and controversial statements passed by senior BJP politicians implying that EVM tampering is possible.
