These are the top 5 moments from the first edition of WWE SmackDown following the WWE Backlash 2024.

1] Champion vs Champion

This week’s show opened with the WWE SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis inviting the WWE Undisputed champion, Cody Rhodes, to the ring. Nick congratulated Cody for a successful title defence against AJ Styles at Backlash 2024 before announcing his next challenger for the title at the WWE King and Queen of the Ring event. Out comes the WWE United States champion, Logan Paul. The WWE universe was seemingly not pleased with Logan being next in line, but as soon as he entered the ring, Logan showed why he is not the one to be taken lightly. Both Cody and Logan fired verbal shots at each other before promising the crowd to walk out of Saudi Arabia as the double champs.

2] Wiseman has a new master

Ahead of Tama Tonga’s King and Queen of the Ring round 1 match-up against Street Profit’s Angelo Dawkins, the Bloodline is shown in their locker room getting ready for the match. WWE Hall of Famer and Bloodline’s wiseman, Paul Heyman, enters the screen and asks Solo to spend a moment alone. Heyman tells Solo that he is Roman Reign’s wiseman, but Solo confronts him by pointing out his lie about Roman opting out of the draft. Solo says that he has talked to Roman and is now the leader of the Bloodline until Roman returns, and that is by the order of the Tribal Chief. Solo hugs Heyman to end the segment.

3] Queen of the Ring matches

There were a total of three round 1 matches of the Queen of the Ring tournament that took place on this week’s episode of SmackDown. In the first match, Nia Jax went toe-to-toe with Naomi, who on several occasions was almost on the verge of getting the win, but eventually, it was the ‘The Irresistible Force,’ Nia Jax who came out on top and qualified for round 2. The next two matches of Queen of the Ring matches were between Jade Cargill vs Piper Niven and Bianca Blair vs Candice LeRae. The matches were relatively shorter than the first match, as Cargill and Blair made their way into the next round very convincingly. Jade Cargill will now face Nia Jax in the next round, while Bianca Blair’s opponent will be revealed over the weekend in a house show when OC’s Michin will go up against Tiffany Stratton.

4] Hayes and Tonga advances

In the first SmackDown’s King of the Ring tournament bracket match, the newly called-up former NXT champion Carmelo Hayes takes on Baron Corbin. Corbin establishes control early in the match, establishing that he is the more experienced one of the two. However, just four minutes into the match, Hayes sneaks up Corbin with a roll-up to pick up the win and enter round 2 of the tournament. In the second match, the MFT of the Bloodline Tama Tonga locked horns with Street Profit’s Angelo Dawkins. This was another short match as Tama Tonga picked up an easy win thanks to the distraction caused by Solo Sikoa and Tamna Loa by attacking the other half of the Street Profit, Montez Ford. After the match, solo attacks Dawkins with a Samoan spike as the Bloodline stands tall in the ring.

5] Main event to the rescue

The longest and best match of the night was the third and final King of the Ring round 1 match of the night between Randy Orton and AJ Styles. Both the superstars delivered on the high expectations of the fans as the match kept swinging from one side to another from time to time. Styles connects his finisher, the phenomenal forearm on Orton and goes for the pin, but Orton, being the veteran, grabs the rope to break the fall. Styles then decides to go for the Styles clash, but Orton counters it with his own finishing move, RKO, to pin the Phenomenal One, one, two and three in the middle of the ring and punches his ticket into round 2 of the tournament.
