Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed in a Fox News interview that former US President Donald Trump pledged his support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia if re-elected.
This assurance came after a private meeting between the two leaders during Zelenskyy’s US visit for the UN General Assembly. Trump had previously expressed his intention to work with both Ukraine and Russia to resolve the conflict.
During their meeting, Zelenskyy presented Trump with a “victory plan” for Ukraine. Afterwards, Zelenskyy confidently stated, “I’ve got from Donald Trump very direct information that he will be on our side, that he will support Ukraine,” as reported by Reuters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “victory plan” has raised eyebrows among US officials, who see it as a renewed plea for more arms and fewer restrictions on long-range missile use. While the plan aims to defeat Russia, some US officials are skeptical about its feasibility.
During his US visit, Zelenskyy met with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to secure bipartisan support for Ukraine’s ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy emphasized his desire to stay out of the election fray, stating, “I don’t want to be involved in the election period… I don’t want to lose one or another part of Americans” Zelenskyy told Fox News.
Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy marked a notable shift in tone, as he has previously questioned US financial support for Ukraine. This contrasts with Democrats, including Biden, who view Ukraine’s victory as crucial to US national security.
