Former Ecuadorean President Sixto Duran-Ballen has died at age 95. He is best known for serving as president during Ecuador’s monthlong border conflict with Peru in 1995, which was the last war in the Americas between sovereign states.

Duran-Ballen’s family said he died Tuesday while resting at home. The family said he did not have any major illness.

He was president in 1992-96, and the localized border conflict with Peru occurred in Jan. 26-Feb. 28, 1995. It ended with a cease-fire and eventually an agreement was reached demarcating the disputed border.

Duran-Ballen retired from politics after his presidency.

He is survived by his wife, Josefina Villalobos, with whom he had eight children. He was born in Boston on July 14, 1921, while his father was on a diplomatic mission.
