US Vice President-elect JD Vance has announced his resignation from the United States Senate, effective Friday. Vance, who represented Ohio, shared the news in a letter on Thursday to Republican Governor Mike DeWine, who will now appoint his replacement.
“To the people of Ohio, I want to express my deep gratitude for allowing me the honour of representing you in the Senate,” Vance said in his letter, as reported by AP. “When I was elected, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I’ve worked every day to keep that promise.”
Vance, elected in 2022 to serve a six-year Senate term, is stepping down after only two years to assume his new role as Vice President of the United States. “It has been a tremendous honour and privilege to serve Ohio in the Senate,” Vance said.
Governor DeWine now faces the task of selecting Vance’s replacement. The appointee will serve until December 2026 and would need to campaign in November 2026 to complete the remainder of the term.
Several prominent Ohio Republicans are interested in the seat, including Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Treasurer Robert Sprague, US Representative Mike Carey, State Senator Matt Dolan, former state GOP chair Jane Timken, and attorney Mehek Cooke.
However, attention has recently turned to Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, who accompanied DeWine on a recent visit to Mar-a-Lago to meet with President-elect Donald Trump.
When asked about the discussions, DeWine declined to reveal details. “I’m not ready to make an announcement yet, but the announcement will be coming soon,” DeWine said, according to AP.
Husted, also present at the event, added, “We’re considering all the options, and that’s really all I have to say.”
Husted is considered a strong contender, not just for the Senate appointment but also for a potential 2026 gubernatorial run. He has a long political resume, including roles as Ohio House Speaker, State Senator, and Secretary of State.
Whoever DeWine chooses will temporarily fill the Senate seat, keeping it in Republican hands, until the 2026 election determines a permanent successor.
