US lists ‘benefits & consequences’ for ‘illegal aliens’ staying in country for over 30 days

This comes after a new rule requiring foreign nationals who remain in the US for over 30 days to register with federal authorities within that time or face strict penalties.

The Department of Homeland Security under the Donald Trump administration, shared a post titled “Message to Illegal Aliens,” asking the foreign nationals to voluntarily leave the US. They outlined both the benefits of self-deportation and the consequences of staying illegally. This comes after a new rule requiring foreign nationals who remain in the US for over 30 days to register with federal authorities within that time or face strict penalties.

“Foreign nationals present in the US longer than 30 days must register with the federal government. Failure to comply is a crime punishable by fines and imprisonment. @POTUS Trump and @Sec_Noem have a clear message to Illegal aliens: LEAVE NOW and self-deport,” the department posted on X, tagging President Trump’s office and Krishi Noem, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

“Self-deportation is safe. Leave on your own terms by picking your departure flight. Keep money earned in the US if you self-deport as a non-criminal illegal alien,” the post said.

The post also lists that self-deportation could help foreigners stay eligible for legal immigration in the future. Those who can’t afford to leave may also be “eligible for a subsidized flight.”

The DHS warned that foreign nationals who fail to report to authorities on time will face serious penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or deportation. “A fine of $998 per day if you received a final order of removal and stayed. A fine of $1,000 – $5,000 if you fail to self-deport after claiming that you will. If you fail to self-deport, you may be subject to jail time,” the post read. Additionally, foreign nationals who don’t register themselves would be barred from returning to the US through the legal immigration system.

“All foreign nationals present in the United States longer than 30 days must register with the federal government. Failure to comply with this is a crime punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both… If not, you will be arrested, fined, deported, never to return to our country again,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement during her daily press briefing on Saturday.

Under the new rule, that came into force from April 11, after a federal judge on April 10 dismissed a legal challenge against it. all non-citizens residing in the US for over 30 days – including visa holders, green card recipients, and work permit holders – must register and carry documentation proving their legal status at all times.

While those with Green Cards and valid visas to work or study are already registered with the government, given the crackdown against immigrants, legal experts said it is advisable for them too to carry their documents with themselves.

An Indian doctoral student “self-deported” from the US on March 11. Ranjani Srinivasan, a PhD scholar at Columbia University, had her F-1 student visa revoked for allegedly “advocating for violence and terrorism” and supporting Hamas. Fearing action by the authorities, she voluntarily left the country using the self-deportation feature in the newly-launched Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App.

When Trump was campaigning, one of his major promises had been a crackdown on illegal immigration. A part his crackdown on immigration, self-deportation is pegged by US authorities as the safest option for undocumented immigrants, one that allows them to exit the country voluntarily without facing legal action.

The 30-day policy being enforced by the Trump administration is a rule that has been around for decades, but rarely enforced since World War II.
