The search for the suspect in the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, has intensified, with New York police releasing a new image clearly showing the face of the man believed to be connected to the killing.
Thompson, who led one of the US’s largest health insurers, was shot dead on Wednesday in midtown Manhattan. Shell casings recovered from the scene reportedly bore the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.”
Here’s what we know so far about the case:
📌 Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel at approximately 6:45am on Wednesday.
📌 Surveillance footage showed the suspect at a Starbucks shortly before the shooting, dressed in dark clothing, with a hooded jacket, face mask, dark trousers, and a grey backpack.
📌 The suspect approached Thompson from behind and shot him in the back and calf. His gun reportedly malfunctioned, but he cleared the jam and continued firing before fleeing the scene on an electric Citi Bike.
📌 Police are using facial recognition technology and a discarded cellphone to track the suspect’s location.
📌 The suspect’s current location remains unknown, but police are focusing on footage from Starbucks and public-use electric bikes, including tracking data from Citi Bike.
📌 Investigators have deployed drones and dogs to search for the shooter. Authorities have also received tips and are offering a $10,000 reward for information.
📌 The shooting is considered a “brazen targeted attack,” with New York’s police commissioner stating that it appears to be a premeditated, planned act.
📌 However, the motive for the attack remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
📌 Brian Thompson, 50, was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare since April 2021. He had been with the company since 2004 and lived in Minnesota with his wife, Paulette, and their two children.
📌 Thompson was in New York for UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference at the time of his death.
📌 Thompson’s wife, Paulette, confirmed that her husband had received threats, although she did not provide specifics on the nature of the threats.
📌 The threats were reportedly linked to dissatisfaction with UnitedHealthcare’s insurance coverage, particularly after protests outside the company’s headquarters in Minnesota earlier this year over alleged coverage denials.
