At least two explosions went off outside Brazil’s Supreme Court building on Wednesday, killing at least one person in the square in front of the court, while evacuating the apex court’s premises.
The court, in a statement said that justices were evacuated safely. Brazil’s solicitor general called the blasts an “attack” as local media reported that the first explosion took place in a parked car’s boot. And as per a CNN report, another blast took place on a street next to Annex 4 of the nearby Congress.
The body of the deceased person was found lying next to the square opposite the court. It was not immediately clear what was the connection of the man with the second blast.
Brazil’s Supreme Court is located across the square presidential palace, where President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva had left for the night minutes before the explosions, reported news agency Reuters.
Brazil’s Federal Police has said that it has opened an investigation into explosions that took place near the federal government buildings in the capital. The Federal Police further added that the Tactical Unit, Rapid Response Team and investigators from the bomb squad have reached the scene of the incident.
According to local media footage, the two blasts took place outside the Supreme Court’s building within 20 seconds of each other. The incident took place in Brasilia’s Three Powers Plaza, an area where Brazil’s main government buildings are located, reported AP.
The presidential security bureau was checking the grounds around the presidential palace while the police blocked all the access to the area where Supreme Court, Congress and presidential palace are located.
