US President Donald Trump has once again lashed out at Indian-origin Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of anti-Jewish views and threatening to cut off federal funding if Mamdani wins the upcoming New York City mayoral election and doesn’t “behave.”
The Republican leader’s comments followed Mamdani’s public pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza, if he visits New York.
“He (Mamdani) is not a socialist, he’s a communist. And he’s said some really bad things about Jewish people,” Trump said on Monday, speaking ahead of a private dinner with Netanyahu.
“He’s going through a little bit of a honeymoon right now, [and] he might [win], but it all comes through the White House. He needs the money through the White House… He’s going to behave… He better behave, otherwise he’s going to have big problems,” Trump added.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Assemblyman from Queens, has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza and recently said he would honour the ICC’s arrest warrant if Netanyahu were to visit the city.
When asked about Mamdani’s pledge, Netanyahu appeared unfazed: “I’m not concerned about that.” Trump jumped in, saying, “I’ll get him out.”
“There’s enough craziness in the world, but I guess it never ends… This is appalling, and it’s silly in many ways because it’s just not serious,” Netanyahu added.
While Netanyahu did not confirm an exact date, he said he plans to visit Trump in New York. He may also visit the city earlier if he decides to attend the UN General Assembly’s high-level meeting in September.
