US President Donald Trump is set to host the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House for peace talks reportedly on Friday, a US official has said, Reuters reported.
The official stated that a framework for a peace agreement is possible to be signed by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan during their meeting with the US president on Friday in Washington.
The two countries, Armenia and Azerbaijan, won their independence in 1991 after the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was dissolved, however, both have been at loggerheads since late 1980s over Nagorno-Karabakh – an Azerbaijani region with a mostly ethnic Armenian population.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region broke away from Azerbaijan with the support from Armenia. However, Azerbaijan retook the control of Nagorno-Karabakh region in 2023 that triggered mass exodus as about 100,000 ethnic Armenians fled to Armenia.
In March 2025, both the countries said they had agreed on a draft peace agreement, but since then the progress for a truce at their borders has been sporadic and slow. The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan met in Abu Dhabi in July for talks.
US President Trump is likely to host the leaders and finalise the draft peace agreement between the two countries, bringing over four decades of conflict to a cease.
