Trump speaks to Putin as Biden plans to lobby US President-elect to support Ukraine

President-elect Trump is scheduled to take the office on January 20 after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. President Biden has invited Trump to the White House on Wednesday.

The US President-elect Donald Trump held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and conveyed his intention not to escalate the Ukraine war, reported Reuters as President Joe Biden plans to lobby with Trump not isolate Ukraine in the war.

The report added that Trump spoke with Putin in recent days. The Republican leader also held talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday. Earlier during the presidential campaign, Trump had criticized the scale at which the US military and financial aid was being provided to Kyiv.

When asked about the Trump and Putin’s call, Ukraine’s foreign ministry stated that they weren’t aware of any advance call being made between them and declined to object or endorse it.

When the Trump administration was asked about the phone call, which was first reported by The Washington Post, its communications director Steven Cheung said, “We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders.”

The US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated that President Biden’s top message during his talks with Trump would be the peaceful transfer of power and to talk about the geo-political situation in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Sullivan, in an interview to CBS News said, “President Biden will have the opportunity over the next 70 days to make the case to the Congress and to the incoming administration that the United States should not walk away from Ukraine, that walking away from Ukraine means more instability in Europe,” as reported by Reuters.

Reports suggested that President Biden would try to lobby support for Kyiv from Trump though it’ll be intriguing to see how Trump administration’s approaches issues of wars and conflicts spread throughout the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine.
