Trump-Putin Alaska Summit Highlights: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin ended without a peace deal. Ahead of his visit, a video conference will take place on Sunday of the “Coalition of the Willing,” co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to the French presidency. Earlier, Zelenskyy said he had a “long, meaningful” call with Trump on Saturday following the Alaska talks, which yielded no breakthrough. Trump also spoke with NATO and European leaders.

No deal on Ukraine war: Trump and Putin’s three-hour summit in Alaska concluded without agreement on ending the war. Both leaders described the talks as “productive.” Putin said they reached an “understanding” on Ukraine, while Trump rated the meeting “a 10,” adding that the onus was on Zelenskyy to pursue a ceasefire with Moscow.

Putin honours Soviet pilots buried in Alaska: After the summit, Putin laid flowers at the graves of Soviet pilots buried in Alaska. He visited Fort Richardson National Cemetery near Anchorage, where a section is dedicated to airmen who died in training accidents or harsh weather while ferrying US-built aircraft to the Soviet Union during World War II under the Lend-Lease program, Reuters reported.

Trump-Putin Summit Live Updates: In letter to Putin, US first lady asks him to consider the children in push to end war in Ukraine

Melania Trump took the unique step of crafting a letter that calls for peace in Ukraine, having her husband President Donald Trump hand-deliver it to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their Friday meeting in Alaska. The letter did not specifically name Ukraine, which Putin's forces invaded in 2022, but beseeched him to think of children and “an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology.”

Nor did the American first lady discuss the fighting other than to say to Putin that he could “singlehandedly restore” the “melodic laughter” of children who have been caught in the conflict.“In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone you serve humanity itself,” she wrote on White House stationery.

Trump-Putin Summit Live Updates: Russia's Lavrov discusses Alaska summit's outcome with Turkish, Hungarian counterparts

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held calls on Saturday with his Turkish and Hungarian counterparts, the Russian foreign ministry said, hours after a summit between the US and Russian presidents yielded no deal on ending the war in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump, who hosted President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday for bilateral talks aimed at ending the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion on Ukraine in early 2022, said that Kyiv should make a deal with Moscow because "Russia is a very big power, and they're not."

The phone call between Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan took place at Turkey's initiative, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on its website.

"The foreign ministers exchanged views on the outcomes of the high-level Russia–US meeting held in Alaska on August 15," the ministry said in its short statement. Turkey has tried to keep diplomatic channels open to both sides during the war, acting as a NATO member, a partner for both Russia and Ukraine, and a potential mediator.

Trump-Putin Summit Live Updates: Russian politicians hail Alaska summit as victory for Moscow

In the early hours of Saturday morning following a summit in Alaska between the leaders of Russia and the United States, senior politicians in Moscow were quick to trumpet the meeting as a win for Russia and its narrative of the war in Ukraine. "The meeting in Alaska confirmed Russia's desire for peace, long-term and fair," said Andrei Klishas, a senior lawmaker from President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party.

He portrayed the summit as a coup for Russia and a loss for Ukraine and its European allies, who have been pushing for an unconditional ceasefire. "The tasks of the SMO will be accomplished either by military or diplomatic means," Klishas wrote, using the acronym for Special Military Operation, the Kremlin's term for the war. "A new architecture for European and international security is on the agenda, and everyone must accept it."

The highly-anticipated summit on Friday in Anchorage yielded no agreement to resolve or pause the conflict, now in its fourth year, although both Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump described the talks as productive. The two men met for nearly three hours before giving a brief media appearance and boarding separate planes home.

Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president known for his hawkish views, said the summit proved that it was possible to hold talks without conditions - as Moscow has insisted - while the fighting in Ukraine rages on. Russia's flagship Channel One morning state news bulletin on Saturday stressed the pageantry around the summit, its global profile, and the warm welcome extended to Putin, who had been ostracized by Western leaders since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

"The Red carpet, handshakes and footage and photographs that are in all global publications and TV channels," it said, saying it was the first time that Trump had met a visiting leader off their plane at the airport. Its correspondent in Alaska said the two leaders had obviously agreed about a lot of things, but did not say what those things were. "The very fact of the meeting in Alaska, its tone, and its outcome represent a significant and joint success for both presidents, each of whom made a tremendous personal contribution to achieving the best possible result at this time," Konstantin Kosachyov, a chair of the foreign affairs committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, wrote on Telegram.

Trump-Putin Summit Live Updates: Ukraine's Zelenskyy to meet Trump on Monday after US-Russia summit secured no peace agreement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that he plans to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington next week after Trump’s summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin secured no agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy said he held a “long and substantive” conversation with Trump on Saturday after the US leader met Putin in Alaska. He thanked Trump for an invitation to meet in person in Washington on Monday and said they would “discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.”

Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of involving Europe. “It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America," he said. "We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.”

Trump rolled out the red carpet for Putin in Alaska, but Friday's summit ended without concrete progress on bringing an end to the war. Trump said that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal,” after Putin claimed the two leaders had hammered out an “understanding” on Ukraine and warned Europe not to “torpedo the nascent progress.” During an interview with Fox News Channel before leaving Alaska, Trump insisted that the onus going forward might be on Zelenskyy “to get it done,” but said there would also be involvement from European nations.

Trump spoke with Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish President Karol Nawrocki, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, according to European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta. She gave no details of the conversation.

There was no immediate comment Saturday from European leaders who, like Zelenskyy, didn't have a place at the table at Friday's summit. Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said on Russian state television Saturday that a potential trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy has not been raised in US-Russia discussions. “The topic has not been touched upon yet,” Ushakov said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. Russian attacks on Ukraine continued overnight, using one ballistic missile and 85 Shahed drones, 61 of which were shot down, Ukraine’s Air Force said. Front-line areas of Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Chernihiv were attacked.

Trump-Putin Summit Live Updates: World leaders react to Trump-Putin summit reaching no deal on Ukraine

- Norwegian foreign minister Espen Barth Eide:

  • "President Putin of Russia reiterated known arguments, such as emphasising the so-called 'root causes' of the war, which is code for the Russian justification for the illegal invasion of Ukraine. Our view is clear: it is important we must continue to put pressure on Russia, and even increase it, to give the clear signal to Russia that it must pay the price."
  • "We must listen to Ukraine's wishes and needs. We know that President Putin wants to split Europe and the United States. With all our allies, we must do everything we can to avoid that. I am optimistic that we can achieve that, but we must be clear that this is a clear motivation for President Putin..."
  • "I don't believe it will have any effect on the battlefield right now. Too little concrete information has come out, and we see no movement at all in the Russian position."
  • - Czech defence minister Jana Cernochova, on X:

  • "The Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska did not bring any fundamental progress towards ending the war in Ukraine, but it did confirm that Putin is not looking for peace, but an opportunity to weaken the unity of the West and spread his propaganda. He is trying to prolong the conflict in order to achieve the maximum of his goals in terms of Russian expansion. Regardless of the human casualties and the devastation of Ukrainian cities."
  • "The meeting was nevertheless important, among other things, because it reveals the true motives and mindset of Vladimir Putin."
  • "For us, it follows that it is necessary to maintain the cohesion of the West and persist in supporting Ukraine so that any agreement on a ceasefire or peace is not only based on Russian notes. This is in our vital interest."
  • - Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto, on X:

  • "The world is a safer place as long as there is US–Russia dialogue at the highest level. Credit to both presidents for making this summit happen. Today once again confirmed: the war in Ukraine will not be settled on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table. Peace can only be achieved through negotiations, dialogue, and keeping diplomatic channels open."
  • "Hungary has stood by this for 3.5 years, unlike Brussels and pro-war European politicians."

Trump-Putin Summit Live Updates: Highlights of Putin's statement after summit with Trump in Alaska

    ON RUSSIA-US TIES

"As is known, Russian-American summits have not been held for more than four years. This is a long time. The past period was very difficult for bilateral relations. And, let's be honest, they have slid to the lowest point since the Cold War. And this is not good for our countries, or the world as a whole.

Obviously, sooner or later, it was necessary to correct the situation, to move from confrontation to dialogue. And in this regard, a personal meeting of the heads of the two states was really overdue."

    ON UKRAINE

"I have said more than once that for Russia the events in Ukraine are associated with fundamental threats to our national security. Moreover, we have always considered and consider the Ukrainian people, I have said this many times, brotherly, no matter how strange that may sound in today's conditions. We have the same roots and everything that is happening for us is a tragedy and a great pain."

    ON COOPERATION WITH TRUMP
