In what is touted to be the first such step in the 250-year US history, President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order making English as the official language of the country, according to a report by Wall Street Journal citing White House officials.

Despite it’s long history, the US has never designated a national language at the federal level. Hundreds of languages are spoken across the country, reflecting its long tradition of immigration.

The move comes as Trump intensifies efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to eliminate all “equity-related” grants and contracts. A follow-up order further mandated that federal contractors certify they do not promote DEI initiatives. The crackdown is part of Trump’s broader effort to roll back progressive policies implemented under previous administrations.

Meanwhile, US Census Bureau data highlights the country’s vast linguistic diversity. More than 350 languages are spoken across the United States, with Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Arabic among the most commonly used languages aside from English.

A 2019 Census Bureau report revealed that the number of people speaking a language other than English at home has nearly tripled since 1980. In that time, the figure surged from 23.1 million (roughly one in 10 Americans) to 67.8 million (about one in five). Despite this shift, English speakers also increased, growing from 187.2 million in 1980 to 241 million in 2019.

Earlier, Trump administration shut down White House Spanish-language page and social media, hours after President’s inauguration on January 20.
