US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be moved closer to Russia in response to threatening remarks from Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and current deputy head of Russia’s Security Council.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
Trump and Medvedev have exchanged sharp barbs in recent days over the war in Ukraine, as tensions continue to rise.
Trump on Tuesday issued a dramatic ultimatum, warning that Russia had “10 days from today” to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face sweeping tariffs, along with countries that continue buying Russian oil. The Kremlin, however, has shown no indication that it plans to meet Trump’s deadline, maintaining its own conditions for peace.
Trump had been at loggerheads with his European counterparts over the war and the US role in it. However, Washington’s policy towards Russia has see-sawed since Trump took office in January from berating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office over extending military assistance in March to acknowledging the need for assisting Kyiv at the recent NATO Summit in July.
Medvedev, once considered a moderate, responded on Monday by accusing Trump of playing a “game of ultimatums” and invoked Russia’s Cold War-era nuclear capabilities in a veiled threat. His remarks came after Trump publicly told him to “watch his words.”
Medvedev had earlier warned Trump to “remember” that Moscow retained Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities.
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Medvedev has transformed into one of the Kremlin’s most hardline voices against the West.
