Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has defended the Republican candidate for his remarks where he said he would not mind if someone had to “shoot through the fake news” to reach him.
“To get me, somebody would have to shoot through the fake news – and I don’t mind that so much,” Trump, who complained about the bullet proof glass around him, said at a rally in Pennsylvania. He referred to the media as “bloodsuckers”.
The attack against the media and press freedom isn’t a new topic for the Republican candidate as he has mocked several reporters during the press conferences over the past decade since arriving on the political scene.
Pointing out at the glass around him during the Pennsylvania rally, Trump said, “I have a piece of glass over here, and I don’t have a piece of glass there. And I have this piece of glass here, but all we have really over here is the fake news.”
“And to get me somebody would have to shoot through the fake news. And I don’t mind that so much. I don’t mind that.”
Since the former president survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the US Secret Service has ensured that a bullet proof glass is put around Trump when rallying outdoors. During the shooting incident in July, Trump hurt his ear and a rally attendee died after which the Secret Service killed the gunman.
It was the first time that Trump connected his issues with the security measures with the attack on the press. Trump said, “The media is so damn bad – it’s unbelievable”.
Trump even criticised the news outlets by calling out direct names: “ABC, ABC, fake news, CBS, ABC, NBC. “These are, in my opinion, seriously corrupt people.”
O the Election Day eve, Republicans and Trump are rallying for the final push to get the voters cast their ballot in the race to White House.
