US President Donald Trump announced he will posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, praising his impact on American politics.

“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said speaking outside the Pentagon on Thursday morning for the memorial services marking the 24th anniversary of the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks.

Kirk was shot during an appearance at a Utah college campus earlier on Wednesday.

“The date of the ceremony will be announced, and I can only guarantee you one thing, that we will have a very big crowd,” President said, adding, “Our prayers are with his wonderful wife, Erika and his beautiful children, fantastic people they are.” “We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”

Earlier, Robert Coles, head of the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office, told reporters that authorities have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used in Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting.

Officials identified it as a “high-powered bolt action rifle” found in a wooded area where the suspect had fled. Coles confirmed that the FBI lab will conduct a full analysis of the firearm. He also noted that investigators have gathered additional evidence, including footwear impressions, a palm print, and forearm marks, for further examination.

Beau Mason, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, shared limited details about the suspect, who remains at large.

He noted that the shooter “blended in” with the crowd and “appears to be of college age.” New images of the suspect emerged overnight after investigators reviewed video footage of the incident.

Special Agent Coles said he does not believe the broader community is at risk, describing the attack as a “targeted event.” He added that the FBI has received over 130 tips related to the case, all of which are being thoroughly investigated.
