Three people were injured in a shooting in New York’s Times Square early on Saturday, police said, according to Reuters.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said an 18-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man and a 65-year-old man were taken to hospital and are in a stable condition.

“A 17-year-old male is in custody and a firearm has been recovered,” an NYPD spokesperson told Reuters.

Police said the shooting happened at about 1:20 a.m. local time (0520 GMT) after a verbal argument involving one of the victims. It is not yet clear if the suspect and the victims knew each other.

Mass shootings happen regularly in the United States, where firearms are widely available.

The NYPD noted the incident comes weeks after a July shooting in a Manhattan office tower that left four people dead, including a senior Blackstone executive and a police officer.

According to a statement from the police department on 4 August, New York recorded its lowest number of shooting incidents and victims for the first seven months of the year and in July.

Crime remains a key issue ahead of the city’s mayoral elections in November.
