The Belgium Police have launched a manhunt for two masked gunmen who reportedly opened fire outside a metro station in the centre of Brussels on Wednesday morning.

The CCTV footage aired by local media showed at least two men carrying weapons while wearing balaclavas near the Clemenceau metro station in the Anderlecht district of southwest Brussels. The public prosecutor’s office said that no injuries were reported in the firing incident.

According to the video footage, the firing took place around 06:15 local time (05:15 GMT). Brussels police spokesperson Sarah Frederickx said that the suspected gunmen may have fled into the tunnels of the metro system.

Brussels police have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation and investigation into the incident. Several cartridge cases were found near the metro station after the firing.

According to Reuters, the Clémenceau metro station and nearby Midi metro station were shut until 2 pm (local time) during the police’s search operation.

At the town hall on Wednesday morning where police and Anderlecht’s mayor were present, Belgium’s interior minister Bernard Quintin also joined in. In a post on X, Quintin said “We are following the situation closely.”

A spokesperson from the public prosecutor’s office Willemien Baert said that the attack by the two gunmen didn’t appear to have “terror motive”, adding that police recovered several bullet shells from the incident site.

Notably, Brussels houses the headquarters of major global institutions like the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The police are yet to arrest anyone in the case and Belgium’s local media reports suggest that the incident could be linked to drug trafficking.
