At least three people have been killed and eight others were wounded after a gunman on a boat opened fire at a crowd in a waterfront bar in US’ North Carolina on Saturday night, officials said.
According to city public information officer ChyAnn Ketchum, a person of interest was detained by the authorities and is being questioned regarding the shootout at American Fish Company in Southport, CNN reported. The extent of injuries reported to eight people remains unknown.
The Southport City, North Carolina officials urged people to avoid the area in an announcement on Facebook. The officials wrote, “There are reports of an active shooter in the Southport Yacht Basin. There is an unknown number of injuries. Avoid the area and remain in your homes. Please report any suspicious activity immediately to 911.”
Southport is located about 30 miles south of Wilmington, near the mouth of the Cape Fear River.
The shooting in Southport adds to the growing list of bars, restaurants, shopping centres, schools among other venues where gun violence has been increasing and these spots were earlier considered as safe.
