In a tragic incident, at least 21 people were killed in a three-vehicle crash on a highway connecting Mexico’s Oaxaca and Puebla states on Wednesday, officials said.
According to Puebla’s Interior Minister Samuel Aguilar, the accident involved three vehicles and apart from the 21 who died in the fatal crash, an unspecified number of people were receiving treatment for their injuries.
The Interior Minister Aguilar further added in an X post that out of the 21 deceased individuals, 18 people died at the scene and three others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Local reports stated that the crash involved a tanker truck, a bus and a van.
According to Mexican newspaper La Jornada, the fatal crash happened on the highway when a cement truck attempted to overtake another vehicle but lost control and crossed into the opposite lane where it hit a bus, and then a head-on-collision into a transport van.
The truck, which had lost control and hit a bus and a transport van, then crashed into a ravine and burst into flames after the dual collisions, Reuters reported.
Aguilar, in an X post stated, “Following instructions from the Governor Alejandro Armenta, we remain in constant coordination to address this emergency and keep the public informed.”
The highways in Mexico have been a deadly site in the recent past due to its steep roads. In March, at least 11 people lost their lives when the bus which was transporting them overturned in Oaxaca. In 2023, at least 29 people had died after a bus crashed into a ravine.
