An American school teacher and former diplomat March Fogel has been released from prison on Tuesday after being arrested by the Russian authorities in 2021 and he is on his way home to the US, the White House said.
Fogel, 63, was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in August 2021 with 17 grams of marijuana and had been sentenced to 14 years in prison for drug smuggling.
Fogel’s release comes at a time when Trump is seeking to mend the relation of the United States with Russia in an effort to secure an end to the three years long Ukraine war. The White House said that Forgel was released on Tuesday in an “exchange”.
A statement by US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz stated the deal to secure the release of Fogel was negotiated by President Donald Trump, Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and the adviser of the President.
President Trump told the media that Fogel would meet him at the White House around 10 pm ET on Tuesday, while Mike Waltz added that he will be united with his family members at the same time.
Detailing about the exchange at the Oval Office, President Trump said “We were treated very nicely by Russia, actually. I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war and millions of people can stop being killed,” CNN reported.
The White House statement added that US special envoy Steve Witkoff personally went to Moscow in an unannounced visit to accompany Fogel to the US.
Fogel’s sister Annie Fogel said that “I plan to celebrate through the next 24 hours. We’re so happy,” BBC reported.
