Three people were reportedly killed in a massive missile and drone attack launched by Russia on Ukraine that aimed to target its war infrastructure early Monday, The Associated Press reported. The casualties were reported in western Lutsk, eastern Dnipro and southern Zaporizhzhia regions.
According to a report by Reuters, Russia had 11 TU-95 strategic bombers in the air and confirmed the launch of several missiles. Two waves of drone attacks were also reported earlier in the day, according to Ukraine’s military, out of which ten of them were destroyed on their approach to the region around Kyiv.
Last night, following a flurry of drone attacks, fresh air raid alerts were sounded in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
In retaliation to Monday’s barrage, a Ukrainian drone attempted to attack an oil refinery in the Russian city of Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow, regional governor Mikhail Yevrayev was quoted as saying by Reuters. No casualties or damage were reported.
Both Russia and Ukraine, while denying any attack on civilians, stood firm that their attacks were aimed at destroying infrastructure that was key to the rival’s war efforts.
Emergency power cuts were introduced in Ukraine following the missile attack, Reuters reported. Water supply, too, was disrupted in parts of the capital city of Kyiv, according to city mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Local authorities reported explosions in the northwestern city of Lutsk, saying that an apartment block had been damaged and that they were verifying possible casualties. Regions near Ukraine’s west and near the Polish border were also targeted.
“The desire to destroy our energy will cost the Russians dearly,” Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, said on Telegram, vowing retaliation.
In neighboring Poland, The Associated Press quoted the military as saying that Polish and NATO air defenses were activated in the eastern part of the country as a result of the attack.
