Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a surprise appearance at the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) on Saturday, joining his in-laws, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and author-turned-MP Sudha Murty, in the front row.

Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty, and her mother, Sudha Murty, were scheduled to speak at a session titled “My Mother, Myself.” As the event host acknowledged the presence of “two wonderful people—Narayana Murthy and former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak,” cheers erupted from the audience.

A video shared by news agency ANI captured Sunak enjoying the event in the company of his in-laws, smiling and waving at the audience.

As the video progresses, Sunak’s aunt-in-law tells him to not just wave at the audience but to greet them with the Indian gesture. He responded with a traditional ‘namaste’, waved, and then returned to his seat.

“For those of you who don’t know, Rishi and Akshata were great supporters of JLF London before he joined the suit gang. But now he is back, and back to us,” the presenter added.

Twitter was pleased with Sunak’s gesture.

“How much tall you may be in your profession or in your position, you are always a kid to an Indian mother. Thanks Mr Sunak, for respecting that value,” one user commented.

“You may be an ex-PM but when mom tells you “namaste karo sab se”, you do so pronto,” joked another.

Since stepping down as Conservative Party leader following the party’s electoral defeat in July last year, Sunak has taken on academic positions at both the University of Oxford and Stanford University—his alma maters.

These roles will run alongside his duties as a Conservative MP on the Opposition backbenches in the UK Parliament. Before entering politics, the 44-year-old had a career in international business and finance, co-founding an investment firm and supporting small and entrepreneurial British businesses.
