As the 2024 US presidential election draws near, Project 2025, a detailed policy proposal has been released by the conservative Heritage Foundation. Spanning nearly 900 pages, it lays out ambitious ideas for a probable second Trump administration.
The document was unveiled in April 2023. It was initiated by former members of the Trump administration and has generated controversy because of its broad and controversial proposals.
The document suggests significant changes to the federal government, including dissolution of certain departments and a conservative stance on social issues.
Pushing for the expansion of presidential powers through the “unitary executive theory,” is one of Project 2025’s most controversial aspects. It seeks to centralize decision-making authority inside the White House.
By directly placing all federal bureaucracy, including independent agencies like the Department of Justice, under presidential authority, it aims to streamline governance.
It also supports stripping thousands of federal officials of their job protections, enabling them to be replaced by politically aligned appointees who support conservative principles.
In line with former President Trump’s previous demands for increased border security, Project 2025 advocates for increased investment to fortify the US-Mexico border.
It suggests a tougher stance against illegal immigration and border control by combining several immigration enforcement divisions under a revamped Department of Homeland Security.
The project calls for a return to a monetary system backed by gold, the elimination of the Federal Reserve, and large tax cuts.
This is in contrast to the present economic policies, which prioritize the reduction of carbon emissions and the promotion of renewable energy.
Socially, Project 2025 strongly opposes pornography and abortion.
It recommends banning the use of the abortion pill mifepristone and severely restricting the distribution of prescription drugs connected to abortion.
The text also demands that pornography be declared illegal. It lays out strict penalties for tech firms that allow users to access explicit content.
Under the project, education policy supports parental control over curriculum and school choice initiatives. It suggests cutting federal funding for initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. It aims to dismantle what it labels as “woke propaganda” in schools.
Internationally, the document outlines a robust foreign policy agenda focused on countering China’s influence and expanding nuclear capabilities.
It criticizes the Biden administration’s handling of international relations, particularly in regards to China, and proposes aggressive measures to strengthen US military capabilities and alliances in Asia.
Former President Donald Trump has distanced himself from the document, stating he is unaware of its origins and disagrees with certain proposals within it.
However, there has been discussion regarding the project’s possible impact in the event of a Trump presidency due to the connections of a number of influential individuals who were involved in its design.
Project 2025 has been attacked by opponents as a regressive plan that compromises civil liberties and widens social gaps. They believe that if the document’s recommendations are put into practice, they might run into serious political and legal hurdles as they differ greatly from current practice.
