President Droupadi Murmu arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday for the second leg of her three-nation tour, where she will meet Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, and other senior officials to boost bilateral ties.
Murmu arrived in New Zealand after concluding her State Visit to Fiji, marking the first time an Indian head of state has visited the Pacific island nation. This visit was part of India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its partnership with Pacific Island Countries, where she engaged with top Fijian leaders to enhance and strengthen the historic partnership between the two countries.
During her visit, President Murmu was honoured with Fiji’s highest civilian award, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ by President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere. In her acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “This award is a testament to the strong bond of friendship that exists between India and Fiji.”
President Murmu engaged in several high-profile meetings and events, including discussions with Fijian President Katonivere and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. In her address to the Fijian Parliament, she underscored the shared values and democratic principles connecting the two nations. “As India emerges strongly on the global stage, we stand ready to partner with Fiji, according to your priorities, to build a stronger, more resilient, and more prosperous nation,” she stated.
A key outcome of the visit was the allocation of the site for a 100-bedded Super Speciality Hospital in Suva, a project funded by the Indian government as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 3rd FIPIC Summit in 2023. Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar remarked, “We are confident that this critical infrastructure for public good will bring a paradigm change in the delivery of quality and affordable health care, not just to Fiji, but to the entire Pacific region.”
President Murmu also highlighted India’s commitment to climate justice, pledging support for Fiji and other ocean states. “As a powerful voice of the Global South, India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Fiji and other ocean states for climate justice,” she affirmed.
In discussions with Prime Minister Rabuka, both leaders addressed the enhancement of development partnerships and climate resilience. President Murmu reiterated India’s focus on clean and renewable energy and support for Fiji’s sustainable growth.
During her visit, President Murmu met with the Indian diaspora in Fiji, praising the ‘Girmitiya’ indentured labourers who arrived 145 years ago. “We see our overseas Indian community across the world as important partners and stakeholders in the journey of building the India of our dreams,” she noted.
The visit also included a ceremonial welcome at the Suva airport, a traditional Fijian welcome ceremony, and visits to the National War Memorial and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, where she laid floral tributes.
At the final stop of her State visit to Fiji, Murmu visited the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple in Nadi, one of the largest Hindu temples in the Pacific region.
President Murmu’s trip, which also includes stops in New Zealand and Timor-Leste, reaffirms India’s dedication to strengthening its ties with Pacific Island nations.
