Pope Francis suffered two episodes of “acute respiratory insufficiency” on Monday, the Vatican said, marking another health setback for the 88-year-old pontiff as he battles double pneumonia.
Francis has been in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since 14 February and has not been seen in public since. He was admitted with a severe respiratory infection that led to further complications.
“Today, the Holy Father experienced two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus,” the Vatican’s latest medical update stated.
The Pope also suffered a bronchospasm—similar to an asthma attack—requiring two bronchoscopies to assess his airways. He was placed on “non-invasive, mechanical ventilation” to aid his breathing. His prognosis remains “guarded,” indicating he is not yet out of danger.
Monday’s developments follow a weekend of relatively positive updates, as well as reports on Friday of another constriction in his respiratory airways.
Francis has faced multiple health challenges over the past two years. He is particularly vulnerable to lung infections, having undergone surgery to remove part of one lung due to pleurisy as a young adult.
Double pneumonia, a severe infection affecting both lungs, can cause inflammation and scarring, making breathing difficult.
This hospitalisation marks Francis’ longest absence from public view since his papacy began in March 2013. Doctors have not indicated when he might be discharged.
