PM Modi-Donald Trump Meeting: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for the United States on Wednesday after concluding his two-day visit to France, where he co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders also held bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening ties.
Both PM Modi and President Emmanuel shared a warm hug at the airport in Marseille before Modi departed for the second leg of his tour.
Modi will be the fourth foreign leader to visit US president Donald Trump following his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States in January.
Within less than a month of his second term in the White House, Trump has hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
In the US, PM Modi will meet President Donald Trump for a bilateral discussion on Thursday (February 13, 2025), in both restricted and delegation-level formats.
PM’s visit coincides with snow and sleet expected in Washington. Just as well, Modi will be staying at Blair House, the US Presidential guest house located right across the road from the White House.
According to reports, six bilateral meetings have been scheduled from the time Modi arrives in Washington, DC, on Wednesday evening, leading up to his meeting with Trump at the White House at 4 pm local time Thursday (2.30 am IST on Friday). The visit will reportedly conclude with a private dinner hosted by the US president later at 5.40 pm (4.10 am IST). The two leaders are also expected to address the media in the Oval Office, either before or after their meeting.
Wednesday’s meeting will put the much-discussed “bromance” between Trump and Modi to the test. During Trump’s first term, the two leaders exchanged bear hugs and warm compliments, with Trump calling Modi “the nicest human being” and Modi referring to Trump as his “dear friend.”
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the significance of Modi’s visit, stating that being invited to the US “within barely three weeks of the new administration taking office shows the importance of the India-US partnership.”
Modi’s two-day visit comes shortly after US last week deported 104 Indian migrants and plans to return many more. Images of deportees in shackles during a 42-hour military flight prompted public anger in India, with a senior Indian government official responding that “this kind of treatment can perhaps be avoided”.
Meanwhile, during his visit to France, Modi and Macron held talks on Wednesday, focusing on enhancing trade and investment ties between the two nations. They also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and various global forums. Additionally, the two leaders jointly inaugurated India’s new consulate in Marseille.
On Tuesday, PM Modi co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit with President Macron in Paris and addressed the 14th India-France CEOs Forum. He also met US Vice President JD Vance, his Indian-origin wife, and their two young sons during his stay in France.
