Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election.
In his message to Putin, who has won a fifth presidential tenure in Moscow’s corridors of power, PM Modi highlighted that he is looking forward to further strengthening the “time-tested” ties between the two countries.
“Warm congratulations to H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin on his re-election as the President of the Russian Federation,” Modi said in a post on social media platform, ‘X’.
“Look forward to working together to further strengthen the time-tested Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia in the years to come,” he said.
Reports from Moscow said Putin won a historic fifth term as Russian President in a landslide victory, securing 87.8% of the vote, the highest ever result in Russia’s post-Soviet history.
There has been criticism of the election process by some Western countries. However Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the allegations and termed them “absurd”.
“If we talk about the illegitimacy of elections in our country, then we should probably talk about the illegitimacy of those 87 per cent of the votes of the population…that were cast for President Putin. This is absurd,” Peskov told a media briefing in Moscow.
Putin’s closest opponent, the Communist Party’s Nikolay Kharitonov secured the second spot in the elections with 4.2 per cent votes of total votes following him, New People Party candidate Vladislav Davankov stood third with 4.8 per cent votes.
The voter turnout in the polls across Russia topped 74 per cent, as per the country’s Central Election Commission.
