TV host “Dr. Phil” accompanied US immigration officers during a crackdown operation in Chicago on Sunday, defending President Donald Trump’s controversial deportation policies as the effort approached the end of its first week.
Phil McGraw, known for his popular TV show on mental health, joined US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and other federal agents for the operation.
McGraw, who had previously spoken at a Trump campaign event, took to X to explain that ICE was targeting 270 “high-value” individuals, saying it was a focused action, not a general sweep. “They’re not sweeping neighborhoods like people are trying to imply,” he stated.
The Trump administration, aiming to intensify immigration enforcement, deputised several law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the US Marshals Service, to assist ICE in its efforts.
In addition to Dr. Phil’s presence, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove publicised his own involvement in the operation.
Bove praised the law enforcement officers, calling them “brave men and women” working together to address what he described as a national emergency resulting from previous immigration policies.
The operation saw arrests in various locations, including outside a Home Depot in Tucson, Arizona, and among Dominican communities in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The total number of arrests nationwide on Sunday reached 956, three times the usual daily average.
However, the move has faced criticism. Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats, expressed concerns that the deportation efforts would target not only criminals but also veterans, essential workers, and other non-criminals.
“We should focus on deporting those who pose a danger to our country,” they stated. “And we should give the rest a chance to earn legal status.”
According to ICE, the operation in Chicago was aimed at enhancing public safety, though further details were not shared.
