The Sweden parliament on Tuesday passed a new law which could land OnlyFans users in prison as the law shall prohibit the purchase of sexual acts online, as it treats buying sexual acts online the same as paying a prostitute for sex.

According to the new Swedish law, it will be a criminal act if any compensation is paid to another person in order to perform a sexual act remotely. The law, which is poised to take effect from July 1, would also make it illegal to profit from or promoting others who perform sexual acts for compensation.

After the bill was passed, Swedish member of parliament Teresa Carvalho said “This is a new form of sex purchase, and it’s high time we modernize the legislation to include digital platforms,” New York Post reported.

However, the law would allow the users to watch and pay for pre-recorded sexual content or live streams that they haven’t requested, Reuters reported.

OnlyFans, which is an adults-only website, allows celebrities, porn stars, influencers among others to sell their sexually explicit material online. It was started in 2016 and currently has hundreds of millions of users, with top creators earning millions of dollars every year.

During the parliamentary debate over the law, Social Democrat lawmaker Sanna Backeskog said “This is about digitalized prostitution, where the boundaries between pornography and human trafficking are blurred but where exploitation and abuse are present,” Reuters reported quoting TT news agency.

A statement by OnlyFans’ spokesperson said the company complies with all the laws and regulations in jurisdictions where it operates. OnlyFans is banned in some countries, including Turkey.
