A New York Police Department (NYPD) sergeant was shot in the Bronx, United States, on Thursday night, according to two law enforcement sources who spoke to CBS News New York. The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York City and is the northernmost among them.
The incident occurred around 10 pm (local time) near the East Gun Hill Road in the Williamsbridge neighbourhood, where video footage showed a large police presence, with multiple patrol cars lined up and the area cordoned off.
The NYPD has released an advisory asking the public to avoid the area: “Due to a police investigation, please avoid the area of Paulding Avenue and East Gun Hill Road in the Bronx,” the advisory read.
A senior NYPD official said the sergeant was grazed in the head by a bullet and was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.
Authorities have not released details about what triggered the shooting or whether any suspects have been apprehended.
Police said additional information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
