‘To help facilitate solution’: Nepal PM Oli resigns amid violent ‘GenZ protests’ over corruption

This comes a day after 19 people died in violent protests triggered by a social media ban.

Nepal PM Oli resigned from the post amid violent GenZ protests

Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned Tuesday “in view of the adverse situation in the country” as anti-corruption protesters defied an indefinite curfew and clashed with police. The move comes amid a fresh wave of agitation, a day after 19 people died in protests by the youths –those under the age of 28 years, termed as GenZ– triggered by a social media ban.

“Resigned to help facilitate a solution and resolve it politically,” Oli said after tendering his resignation, effective immediately.

Oli’s government lifted the social media ban late Monday after protests turned violent. An indefinite curfew was imposed in capital city Kathmandu.

Before stepping down from the post, the PM had called an all-party meeting and urged the protesters to “engage in dialogue”.

Earlier in the day, the protesters also set fire to the residences of PM Oli in Balkot, President Ram Chandra Poudel, and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, according to AP report.
