A man from Colorado has filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s over an E. coli outbreak in Quarter Pounder burgers which has led to the death of one person and sickened close to 50 others.
The lawsuit was filed in Circuit Court in Cook County, Illinois on Wednesday and states that Eric Stelly visited a McDonald’s store in Greeley, Colorado on October 4 and ate food and later tested positive for E. coli.
The health officials in Colorado later on told Stelly that his exposure to E.coli is linked to the outbreak of E.coli at McDonald’s. Though Stelly lives in Greeley, he has sued McDonald’s in Chicago as it is the headquarters of the fast food chain.
The lawsuit alleges that McDonald’s was negligent in handling and care of the food and hence $50,000 in damages has been sought by Stelly.
Detailing about the incident which could pave the way for a trust deficit between the customers and McDonald’s store, its USA President Joe Erlinger on Wednesday said that the world’s biggest fast-food chain can rebuild the trust of customers again. “Given the recent events of the past 24 hours, our priority is to reinforce the confidence of American consumers,” Erlinger said.
Shares of McDonald’s also plunged on Wednesday by 4.3% in mid-day trading. A spokesperson of the US Centers for Disease Control said that they expect more E.coli cases but added that “McDonald’s has moved rather quickly to take action to, hopefully, prevent as many cases as possible,” as reported by news agency Reuters.
