Two people were killed and three others seriously injured in a terror attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, Manchester, on Wednesday.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) identified the attacker as a 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, who drove a car into a crowd before stabbing bystanders during Yom Kippur, a Jewish holiday. The police shot him dead at the scene. Police also confirmed he was wearing a vest that appeared to be an explosive device, though no bomb was found.

Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, entered the UK as a child and became a citizen in 2006. Initial checks show he was not part of the UK’s counter-radicalisation programme, the Associated Press reported.

Three suspects, including a woman in her 60s, have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offences. The GMP declared ‘Plato’ – the codeword for a marauding terror attack at 9.37 am. A bomb disposal unit was also deployed at the scene.

UK leaders and Jewish community representatives condemned the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a ‘barbaric attack’ and said Israel grieves with the UK’s Jewish community. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer announced additional police protection at synagogues across the country, while London Mayor Sadiq Khan said patrols in the capital would be stepped up.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis called the attack the “tragic result” of an unrelenting wave of antisemitism in the UK.

Police continue to treat the incident as terrorism and have made three further arrests as part of their investigation.
