US President Donald Trump on Friday announced a fresh slew of tariffs on imported commodities, including pharmaceutical products and trucks. These new set of tariffs imposed by the United States administration are set to kick in from October 1.
Posting on his social media network Truth Social, Trump announced these tariffs were imposed for “national security reasons” and to save American companies from “unfair outside competition.”
“We have begun to see goods prices showing through into higher inflation,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned in a recent news conference, adding that higher costs for goods account for “most” or potentially “all” of the increase in inflation levels this year.
Trump’s new move could also have a major impact on India’s pharmaceutical sector, which is one of the most dependent domestic industries on trade with America.
Pharmaceutical companies
The Trump administration announced it will impose import taxes of 100 percent on pharmaceutical drugs from October 1. Trump said on Truth Social that the pharmaceutical tariffs would not apply to companies that are building manufacturing plants in the United States, which he defined as either “breaking ground” or being “under construction”.
Kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities
Donald Trump announced that US will import 50 percent tariffs on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, set to kick in from October 1. While Trump did not provide a legal justification for the tariffs, he appeared to stretch the bounds of his role as commander-in-chief by stating on Truth Social that the taxes on imported kitchen cabinets were needed “for National Security and other reasons”.
Upholstered furniture
Trump announced import taxes of 30 percent on upholstered furniture being shipped from overseas from October 1, citing national security issues. In a post on Truth Social, the US President said that the tariffs on furniture was imposed due to “large scale flooding” of these products into the United States, terming it an “unfair practice.”
Heavy trucks
Finally, Trump imposed 25 percent import taxes on heavy trucks, expressing confidence that these fresh taxes will help to reduce the government’s budget deficit while increasing domestic manufacturing. The US President posted on Truth Social, “In order to protect our Great Heavy Truck Manufacturers from unfair outside competition, I will be imposing, as of October 1st, 2025, a 25% Tariff on all “Heavy (Big!) Trucks” made in other parts of the World. Therefore, our Great Large Truck Company Manufacturers, such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks, and others, will be protected from the onslaught of outside interruptions. We need our Truckers to be financially healthy and strong, for many reasons, but above all else, for National Security purposes!”
