After UK PM Rishi Sunak called for elections on July 4, the Labour Party which appears to be running ahead of the Conservatives as per the latest polls, might have to find a solution as reports suggest that the former party leader Jeremy Corbyn is poised to contest the polls independently.

Jeremy Corbyn, who was suspended as the Labour MP over his stance on anti-Semitism within the party in 2020, hasn’t officially confirmed the development but the reports by the BBC and The Telegraph suggests that Corbyn is all set to announce his candidature from the Islington North seat against the Labour party.

Jeremy Corbyn, who has represented the London constituency for the past 40 years, won the 2019 elections by a majority of 26,188 which made it one of the safest seats for the Labour party.

It could be a quandary for the Leader of Opposition and Labour party chief, Keir Starmer, who is poised to reach the 10 Downing Street as per latest polls.

The unwelcome distraction for Keir Starmer could pose a risk as the Labour party might be split into two ahead of July polls, between the Labour leadership and the dominant left wing of the party.

The Labour party hasn’t officially announced its candidate for the Islington North seat, though the BBC reported that the party has narrowed it down to two candidates, namely Sem Moema, a member of the London Assembly and Praful Nargund, an Islington councillor. And the result of the final selection is reportedly set to be announced on June 1.

In 2020, a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, accused the Labour party that it violated the equality laws and since, at that time, the leader of the party was Jeremy Corbyn, he was suspended as Labour MP.
