In an airstrike by the Israeli Defense Forces in Gaza on Sunday, five people were killed, including a photojournalist as the strikes targeted an office of the Civil Defense service in central Gaza’s Nuseirat Camp area.
Ahmad Al-Louh, 39, a journalist with Qatar based news channel Al Jazeera was killed in the Israeli strikes amid the ongoing hostilities in the Palestinian territory between Israel and Hamas militant group.
According to a CNN report, Al Jazeera condemned the attack and said that Ahmad was “brutally killed” while the Civil Defence service was trying to rescue a family which had received injuries in an attack earlier.
“Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed al-Louh was killed today, Sunday, in an Israeli bombardment,” the news channel’s website wrote.
The IDF confirmed that it conducted strikes at the Civil Defence office in Gaza and claimed that the office was being used as a “command-and-control center” for Hamas militant group.
The IDF further stated that Ahmad, Al Jazeera’s journalist killed in the strike, was a “terrorist” who was earlier a part of the Islamic Jihad, reported CNN. However, Israel did not provide any evidence supporting the alleged claims.
According to news agency AFP, Ahmad is the fifth Al Jazeera journalist to be killed since the war began in Gaza.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 137 journalists have been killed in Gaza which includes 29 Palestinian, two Israeli, and six Lebanese.
In a separate incident, at least 15 people were killed when an Israeli strike targeted a school which was sheltering displaced people in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.
