Hamas has announced the new political bureau head of its outfit, a senior official in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar. This announcement was made on Tuesday after the Israel assassinated its former chief Ismail Haniyeh.
Sinwar’s appointment was announced in a brief statement by Hamas wherein the militant group said, “The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyr Commander Ismail Haniyeh, may Allah have mercy on him.”
First reactions toward this development have come in from Israel’s military IDF (Israel Defense Forces), which said that Sinwar will also meet the similar fate as other terrorists who attacked Israel on October 7.
The Times of Israel quoted Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari of IDF, who told Al-Arabiya TV that “There is only one place for Yahya Sinwar, and it is beside Muhammad Deif and the rest of the October 7th terrorists. That is the only place we’re preparing and intending for him.”
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a bomb strike in Tehran when the Hamas leader was attending the inauguration ceremony of new Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Haniyeh was killed by a bomb which already put up in the guest house he was staying and it detonated when he and his security guard were there.
This development has ruptured the talks between Israel and Hamas for a possible ceasefire and return of hostages to end the over ten months war raging in West Asia.
Sinwar, who has spent a considerable amount of time in Israeli prison, was elected as Hamas’ Gaza leader in 2017 due to his staunch personality to counter Israeli narratives and a harsh enforcer.
As per Times of Israel, Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan was quoted by Al Jazeera as saying that, “The problem in negotiations is not the change in Hamas rather Hamas remains steadfast in the battlefield and in politics…The person leading today is the one who led the fighting for more than 305 days and is still steadfast in the field.”
