Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a “crisis of trust” between them amidst ongoing military operations.

Netanyahu stated that his confidence in Gallant had “eroded” over recent months, ultimately leading to the decision to remove him from the role.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz is set to replace Gallant as defence minister, while Gideon Saar has been named the new foreign minister, according to a statement from Netanyahu’s office.

In a statement, Netanyahu said: “In the midst of a war, full trust between the prime minister and the defence minister is more essential than ever.”

“Unfortunately, although there was such trust and very productive work in the first months of the campaign, over recent months, this trust has fractured between myself and the defence minister.”

Netanyahu added that “significant gaps emerged between Gallant and me in the handling of the campaign.”

Gallant, in response, posted a short message on X, stating that the security of Israel “was and will always remain the mission of my life”.
