Israel has announced a sweeping evacuation order in the southern Gaza Strip in Rafah and neighbouring Khan Younis, biggest since Tel Aviv restarted its offensive against Hamas after the ceasefire agreement collapsed.

The Israeli military in its order instructed the citizens to immediately leave Rafah and Khan Younis and move to al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, and warned that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are “returning to intense operations to dismantle the capabilities of the terrorist organisations” in the region, BBC reported.

The United Nations human rights wing accused Israel of not providing adequate measures to accommodate those affected by the evacuation orders and is neither ensuring satisfactory hygiene, health, safety and nutrition conditions, which is reportedly against the requirements of the international law for evacuations.

In counter to UN’s accusation, the Israeli government stated that it was involved in the evacuation of citizens in the southern Gaza in order to ensure that they don’t become a human shield for Hamas as it accuses militant groups of using its citizens against the international law.

A ceasefire agreement was signed between Israel and Hamas on January 19, bringing a pause on the hostilities for about two months, until Israel restarted its offensive against Gaza on March 18, accusing Hamas of rejecting a new US proposal to extend the ceasefire and free the 59 hostages still held in Gaza.

According to the United Nations, the food and medical supplies to 2.1 million population of Gaza has been stuck since March 2 as Israel has blocked deliveries of humanitarian aid to Palestine.

The death toll in the war, which started in October 2023, has crossed 50,000, Gaza run health ministry reported earlier.
