Thousands around the world protest demanding an end to the violence in Gaza
- Thousands of protesters took to the streets in major cities worldwide on Saturday, demanding an end to the violence in Gaza and West Asia as the first anniversary of Israel's war in the Palestinian enclave approaches.
- In London, about 40,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through the city centre. Thousands also gathered in Paris, Rome, Manila, Cape Town, and New York City. Demonstrations occurred near the White House in Washington, where protesters expressed opposition to US support for Israel's military actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
- In Times Square, New York City, protesters wore black-and-white keffiyeh scarves and chanted slogans like, "Gaza, Lebanon you will rise, the people are by your side." They held banners calling for an arms embargo against Israel.
- The recent violence in the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict began when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.
In response, Israel launched a military assault on Gaza, which has resulted in nearly 42,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza's health ministry. The conflict has displaced almost all of the enclave's 2.3 million residents, caused a hunger crisis, and led to allegations of genocide at the World Court, which Israel denies.
