The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Maria Corina Machado as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday afternoon, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the world. This year, the committee received a total of 338 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, which consisted of 244 individuals and 94 organisations.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was announced at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, and the name was made public at 2.30 pm IST. The prize is also accompanied with a hefty cash reward, in addition to the diploma and the gold medal.

Nobel Peace Prize: Cash reward

The cash reward for the Nobel Peace Prize is 11 million Swedish kroner (SEK) for 2025, specified the Nobel Prize website in December 2024. This amounts varies each year according to the funds available with the Nobel Foundation.

The prize money set for current year amounts to 1.17 million USD or over Rs 10.36 crore in Indian currency. The prize money can be split between up to three Nobel Laureates for the year.

The Nobel Peace Prize is a highly coveted but unpredictable honour. Experts say the committee typically focuses on the durability of peace, the promotion of international fraternity and the quiet work of institutions that strengthen those goals.

There was persistent speculation ahead of the announcement about the possibility of the prize going to US President Donald Trump, fueled in part by the president himself, but longtime Nobel watchers said that his chances were remote despite notable foreign policy interventions for which he has taken personal credit.

On multiple occasions, Trump has credited himself with negotiating the end of the India-Pakistan conflict earlier this year, as well as the ceasefire in Gaza.
