Vice-presidential candidates JD Vance, the Republican Senator from Ohio, and Tim Walz, the Democratic Governor of Minnesota, will take part in the sole vice-presidential debate of the 2024 US election.

The debate will be hosted by CBS News, with Norah O’Donnell, anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News, and Margaret Brennan, moderator of Face The Nation and CBS News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent, serving as moderators.

CBS News has outlined the rules for the debate, which will be similar to the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump held earlier this month.

No live audience will be present, and while the candidates’ microphones will remain on throughout, CBS reserves the right to mute them if necessary.

No commission on presidential debates this year

This election marks the first time since 1988 that the Nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates has not been involved in organising the debates.

In 2022, the Republican National Committee withdrew from the commission, citing concerns over bias against GOP candidates, particularly Donald Trump. For the 2024 election, media outlets have been negotiating directly with the campaigns to schedule and organise the debates.

How JD Vance is preparing for the VP debate

Senator JD Vance has been preparing for the debate for over a month, a source involved in the process told CBS News. His preparation has included “murder board” sessions with his wife and advisers, as well as senior Trump adviser Jason Miller.

Vance’s focus has been studying Walz’s debate style and policy record, intending to highlight what he sees as the Minnesota governor’s “left-wing views.”

Vance aims to use the debate as a platform to explain how the Trump-Vance administration would improve the country’s well-being. “We’re studying up as much as we can on the issues that matter to the American people,” Vance told reporters last week, as reported by the CBS news.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a fellow Minnesotan and Republican, has been standing in for Walz during Vance’s mock debate sessions. Emmer, familiar with Walz, has spent the past month studying his mannerisms and speech patterns to help Vance prepare. “My job was to be able to play Tim Walz so JD Vance knows what he’s going to see,” Emmer told ABC’s This Week.

How Tim Walz is preparing for the VP debate

Governor Tim Walz has been working with a close team of advisers to prepare for the debate, according to sources familiar with his preparations. His team includes individuals who helped Vice President Kamala Harris in her debate prep, along with long-time aides from his previous gubernatorial campaigns.

For Walz, the debate presents an opportunity to introduce himself to a national audience, as his name recognition has been largely limited to Minnesota. “You’ll hear me talk about issues that impact Americans, making sure they have the opportunity to thrive,” Walz told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow earlier this month. “I’m looking forward to it. I’ll work hard, that’s what I do.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is standing in for Vance during Walz’s debate prep. Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is close in age to Vance and also assisted Harris during her 2020 debate preparations.
