Israel on Friday stated that its fighter jets targeted military sites belonging to the Houthi rebels on Yemen’s western coast and in the capital, Sanaa. Meanwhile, Israel prime minister said the Iran-backed rebels “will continue to pay a heavy price” for their attacks on his country.
The targets included facilities at the Hezyaz power station in Sanaa, “which serves as a central source of energy” for the Houthis’ military activities, according to a statement from the Israeli army.
The statement also noted that the air force had struck military infrastructure in the western ports of Hodeidah and Ras Isa, Yemen’s main oil export terminal.
Earlier on Friday, the Iran-backed Houthis reported strikes near Al Sabeen Square in Sanaa, as well as six strikes in Hodeidah.
Earlier, British security firm Ambrey stated that it had received reports of ongoing airstrikes across Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen, including the port of Ras Issa, the country’s main oil export terminal.
In comments after the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Houthis “are paying and will continue to pay a heavy price for their aggression against us”.
“Today, we attacked terrorist targets of the Houthi terrorist regime along the western coastal strip and deep in Yemen,” Netanyahu said on X.
“The Houthis are a proxy of Iran and they serve the terrorist objectives of the Iranian axis in the Middle East. They constitute a danger to Israel and to the entire region, including global freedom of navigation,” he added. “We will not tolerate attacks on our citizens and on our country.”
Since November 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly launched drones and missiles towards Israel and carried out attacks on international shipping in waters near Yemen to support Palestinians amidst Israel’s war with Hamas.
